Creating and maintaining a healthy lifestyle requires the inclusion of regular fitness activities into your daily routine. This is important for everyone, not just those who are living with diabetes. Research has proven that regular exercise can reduce stress, lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure, and reduce the risk for having a heart attack, stroke, or heart disease. Although many people have the desire for healthy change, some lack the motivation needed to jump-start their desire into action. Reasons for lack of exercise vary from person to person. Maybe they feel they do not have enough time during the day, perhaps they dislike exercising when it is too hot or too cold outside, or others may simply be honest enough to say that the thought of running or lifting weights has never appealed to them in the first place. If the thought of going to a gym does not appeal to you, don’t let that hinder you from adding a fitness routine into your life. Getting fit starts with finding activities that you enjoy and incorporating them into your weekly routine. Fitness success can start simply by enrolling in a dance class, taking long bicycle rides, routinely walking in a mall, or taking your dog for evening walks. Once you have identified several activities that you enjoy, invite family or friends to join you in your routine – you will find having this support system will help you stay motivated.
You will quickly see and feel the benefits of having a regular fitness routine. The increased activity will help keep your weight in a healthy range, your stress level will be reduced, and you will sleep better and feel more energetic throughout the day. Research has proven that incorporating regular exercise into your weekly routine and having a nutritious diet, will keep you at a lower risk for developing various health problems, including Type 2 diabetes. It is important to note that based on your current health condition, it is recommended that you first talk to your doctor about the type of exercise and amount of exercise that is right for you, prior to starting your routine.
